ALTERNATIVE CURES/HOME REMEDIES
Primum non nocere, which means "First, do no harm." This is a well known phrase from a similar one in the Hippocratic Oath. I really believe in that, and try to use the safest treatments that work whenever possible.
Below you'll find treatments or remedies, if you will, for many of our everyday ills. I've either used them myself with success, or recommended them to others with success, so I have personal knowledge that they work.
I'll also included other remedies that I believe work either from strong intuition (I'll have a post about that in the future) or empirical evidence from third-hand knowledge.
I will be adding many more as time goes on, but I wanted to get the first few up meanwhile, especially the ones that seem to affect us all on a frequent basis. If anyone is looking for one in particular, let me know and I'll get that uploaded first.
I do need to say, that while these treatments are usually very safe you still need to check with your health care professional first before trying any of them, because anything has a possibility to be harmful. If pregnant, especially don't use any treatments without your doctor's approval as some natural treatments can bring on labor.
I've gathered these from years of studying natural alternative health. Some of them are very well known, but some others you may not have heard of before. I wish I knew who "discovered" them as I would give credit, but some are so old they go back so many years that I'm not sure anyone knows. I would be happy to give credit where due if anyone has any evidence of that.
There are many, many different "natural" cures, and I can't list them all. What I've attempted to do is choose a few of the best, most effective and safest ones in my opinion. Safety is foremost for me, so the ones I've chosen may seem at first glance to be so simplistic so as not to work well, but don't let the simplicity fool you; these are very effective treatments.
I'm aware that many people think that over the counter medication is safe, but even if they are considered relatively safe they do have side effects and any medication, is hard on the liver, and a healthy liver is vital to good health. So think twice before reaching for the over the counter med for that "quick fix."

Lastly, I'd like to suggest trying EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) first, and on everything. If you missed my blog about EFT. Check out the one in March 2010 entitled Emotional Freedom From Food. I will be mentioning EFT many times, as it has many uses. Energy healing is the wave of the future and with EFT being on the forefront of the "Energy Healing Movement" you will be hearing a lot about it in the future. Remember, try it on everything.
1. SINUS INFECTION - Thanks to The Oprah Show most people now know the benefits of the neti pot. If you don't know how to use it or are hesitant, you can check out youtube, because some generous people have demonstrated how it works. Not everyone with a video uploaded is doing it correctly so make sure you follow the directions included with the pot, but the vids there are helpful to see how some people do it. I know sometimes there is a little trepidation the first time, and the vids show how simple it can be. Just make sure to use the correct amount of salt, adding more, or less can make it uncomfortable. Don't use table salt, though, because it contains chemicals. A ceramic neti pot is better then plastic since it can be kept cleaner.
A lesser known help for sinus infection is humming. It has been found that strong humming for an hour a day for four days can cure a sinus infection. Just don't do the humming when operating any machinery (driving). The reason that humming works is that it baths the area in nitric oxide which helps clear up blockages. So you might want to try this first if you are totally blocked, because sometimes the neti pot wash can't always get past the blockage.
Another effective treatment is turmeric, yes the spice turmeric. It is very helpful for sinus infections, because it is a natural anti-inflammatory. It often works better then even prescription anti-inflammatory meds. In fact many doctors in Europe prescribe this natural treatment over prescription meds. You can use it in food, it is great in rice, or you can take it in capsule or tablet form. I would get the purest form that you can without a lot of added unnecessary and possibly unhealthy inactive ingredients that are so common in supplements. I make my own by putting turmeric in veggie capsules using a capsule filler machine. Turmeric is best absorbed along with a little fat so add some coconut oil into the rice too. Black pepper is also known to help with the absorption of turmeric. The beneficial ingredient in turmeric is called curcumin. Turmeric is one of the best spices you can use. It has been referenced as protective against many ills, including cancer.
You might have to use the turmeric first, before the neti pot. Many people report that if their sinuses are completely blocked they can't even use the neti pot because the solution can't get through the blockage. In that case, use the turmeric first, and the humming. Peppermint essential oil is also helpful if you put a few drops in a carrier oil and apply to your sinus areas, breathing in the aroma (aromatherapy) of the peppermint oil sometimes helps as well. Massaging the sinus area could help too, as well as alternating hot and cold packs on the sinus areas.
Once you are able to loosen up the blockage you can use the neti pot, and continue to use the neti pot to keep the sinus infection away. I do want to say it really is best to boil the water first before using it in the neti pot. In most cases it isn't necessary, but there have been a few instances of problems from water that is contaminated even from the tap. Just bring it to a boil, and let it cool before using it then add the required amount of salt.
Lastly, probiotics are very helpful. Remember health begins in the colon. And while most don't associate the colon with the sinus, the health of your colon effects your entire health. Some people even find using some types of probiotics in a sinus rinse very effective as well. Check with your health care provider to help determine which ones would be best.
One final thought, if you are getting recurring sinus infections realize that something is off with your health, and work to address getting healthy in all aspects, not just your sinus areas. Your reoccurring sinus infections may be bacterial, viral, or fungal. If any of those can get control of your sinuses you are not in optimal health, and need to address all areas of your health. Failing to do that will only mean more health problems in the near future.
2. HICCUPS - This hiccup cure is amazing, and I have never known it not to work. If it doesn't work the first time try it again. It is a little difficult to do, but to cure a stubborn case of the hiccups, this is the one you want. Here are the directions, follow them exactly. Take a deep breath and hold it and swallow - continue to hold it, don't let any air out, and take in a little more air and hold it and swallow again - continue to hold it, and again take in a little more air and continue to hold it and swallow again - it may be getting difficult, but try to do it one more time. If it doesn't work the first time try it again, and it will work if you do it right. In the beginning after doing it, it will feel like you are going to hiccup again, but you don't and the feeling quickly goes away. Cured!
3. HEADACHE - One of the best treatment for a headache is acupressure. Simply find the fleshy spot between your thumb and forefinger on your hand, and press on it or squeeze it with the opposite thumb and forefinger. You need to apply firm steady pressure for at least 3 minutes (time it). It should hurt a little and then you know you have found the "sweet spot". You can massage it a little as well as long as you keep steady pressure and don't interrupt the pressure. Do both sides, but if your headache is only on one side, doing only the corresponding side may be enough. If after 3 minutes you don't have relief from your headache, you should keep the pressure and massage until the "sweet spot" doesn't hurt anymore, then you know you have restored the flow of energy and your headache should be gone. If it returns repeat the process, but it is usually gone for good, at least for that headache. If you like to use acupressure as treatment, as I do, I recommend getting New Choices in Natural Healing. You can get a used book very cheap, or see if your local library has it. Not only does it contain loads of natural healing therapies, but has nice acupressure illustrations so you can use it for many different symptoms.
Headaches have many causes so the acupressure is best to try first, but you can add others, as well, tailored to the cause. If it is a sinus headache, try the sinus infection treatment also. They can be caused by high blood pressure (urgent to get blood pressure under control) allergies, eye strain, etc. It can be hormonal, the point is there are many causes, and many treatments. Make sure you're hydrated, drink a glass of pure filtered water, and try EFT, you'll get excellent results with that.
Another great treatment is to soak your feet, and ankles in hot water while applying a cold pack (wrapped in a towel) to your forehead, and temples. Adding Epsom Salt (Magnesium Sulfate) to the foot bath is beneficial too, since you will absorb some of the magnesium through your skin, and magnesium is a muscle relaxer. Many people nowadays are deficient in magnesium, so you might want to take a magnesium supplement, or load up on magnesium rich foods. Pure unsweetened cacao is on of the best, and healthiest source of magnesium. Magnesium is especially helpful for a migraine headache.
Peppermint oil is helpful if you put a few drops in a carrier oil and apply to your temples, across the top of your forehead, behind your ears, and under your nose. It also helps to breathe in the peppermint essential oils. Take a number of deep breaths while holding the oils under your nose. Be cautious when putting any oil near your nose so as to not let it get in your nose as any oils you breath in or get into your nose can possibly lead to lipid pneumonia. Also, make sure to keep it away from your eyes. Make sure you use real essential oil of peppermint.
Frequently a headache is caused by stress, if that is the case follow the treatment for stress also.
4. STRESS - This is a real killer, and I mean that literally. One of the most important things you can do for your health, is to learn how to control stress, and the toll it takes on your health.
Deep diaphragmatic breathing it one of the best ways, and you always have it at your disposal, no matter where you are or what situation you are in. There are all different ways to do it, but keep it simple, breathe in slowly and deeply through your nose, and make sure your diaphragm expands out when you breathe in, and goes in when you breathe out slowly through your slightly opened mouth. Do this as long as necessary. Remember, breathe from your diaphragm not your chest.
Magnesium is great also, this mineral is sometimes referred to as the anti-stress mineral. I would check with your natural health practitioner as to what kind and how much to take, but it has been found lately that many people are deficient in this valuable mineral. This is where epsom salt comes in again as a bath, or even just a foot bath is great because you will absorb some of the magnesium through your skin. Just follow the directions on the container, and don't stay in the bath for longer then 20 minutes, usually 2 cups per bath is recommended. Be careful getting up as some people become light headed, and I recommend rinsing off, or showering afterwards as some people's skin is sensitive to the salt remaining on the skin surface.
It almost goes without saying a good diet is very important, no processed foods, and make sure you eat plenty of foods rich in magnesium, the b vitamins, and vitamin c.
Lavender essential oil is very good for stress, as well as chamomile oil, and you can always have a cup of chamomile tea.
Meditation is great, get a good CD, and learn how to do it well.
Music is another good tool, put on your favorite music, or invest in a CD that has scientific expertise behind it. I recommend anything by Dr. Jeffrey Thompson. He uses music to alter brain waves, and has made it his life study.
A couple of other things are yoga and massage. Although, I know these aren't possible for everyone.
I know a great stress reducing technique, and it is very simple to do. You can try it sitting in your seat right now. Look straight ahead, then up a little above eye level, keep your eyes steady on that spot and don't move them, but "see" the other things in your environment while you keep looking at that one spot. Take it all in, the things on your right, your left, above and below. Then "look" at the other things in the room, in your mind, include the unseen things behind you, etc. Do this without moving your eyes from that one spot. You will notice when you do this, and when you have others do it, your breathing will slow and deepen and your shoulders will relax.
The theory behind this exercise is very interesting, and makes a lot of sense. When we are stressed, anxious, or fearful our focus is so intently on that one thing, and we see nothing else. Part of the stress is the intense concentration on it, almost like everything else is excluded, closed out. This technique broadens our focus and it works immediately, you will be amazed at the results.

If you like homeopathy you can try a bach flower remedy called Rescue Remedy. You can check it out at "Rescue Remedy". It is very popular, very effective, and very safe. If you do not want to buy from Amazon, I still recommend checking out products there so that you can read the reviews on the products, and then you can still buy it at Whole Foods Market or health food stores as well. One form is in an alcohol base, but you only use 4 drops at a time. I put the drops in hot water to burn off most of the alcohol. Some people use the drops straight and put them under their tongue. You can also get Rescue Remedy for your pets too, as we know sometimes they are very stressed as well.
5. KIDNEY STONES - I know from personal experience how painful this condition is. The most important thing in preventing kidney stones is to keep well hydrated by drinking plenty of pure clean water every day. The usual recommendation is to drink approximately half your body weight in ounces a day. This can change according to activity level, temperature, etc. Equally important is to restrict salt intake if you are prone to developing them.
It is also important to make sure you get plenty of the B vitamins, especially vitamin B6. You might want to consider supplements. Magnesium is also important, and I don't think I even have to mention how important diet is; drop that soda right now! With calcium oxalate stones, the studies so far have indicated that dairy calcium isn't a problem, but you might want to mitigate high oxalate foods, like spinach and rhubarb among others.
Below I've posted a youtube.com video that I think is the best treatment for dissolving calcium oxalates stones which are the most prevalent stones that people form. The person who made the video was generous enough to post it. I've also included written instructions below if you need to check back for the directions, and don't wish to view the video again. Do watch it the first time you use it though. And remember, if it doesn't work the first time repeat it.
Directions:*Take at least 20 lemons (organic preferred) and juice the lemons. You will need at least 20 ounces of fresh lemon juice.
*Take 8 ounces of straight lemon juice and drink it down. Make sure you rinse your mouth out with water and/or water with baking soda (make sure you don't drink the baking soda mix) to remove the acid from your teeth. Contrary to the video, I don't recommend brushing your teeth right after, as they are softened when you expose them to the acid of the lemon juice, and brushing right after may damage them further, just rinse your mouth out thoroughly.
*One hour later, drink one 8 ounce glass of water, with one ounce of lemon juice stirred in it.
*You want to continue the one ounce of lemon juice in 8 ounces of water every hour for 12 hours, until the lemon juice is finished. Always rinse your mouth out afterwards.
You can use a strainer to strain your urine to see if you pass it. If it doesn't pass after the first time, you may have to repeat this. Repeat it as often as you need to, to get the job done. With multiple stones and/or large stones you probably will have to repeat it. Remember this will only work on the calcium oxalate stones, luckily the majority of kidney stones are this type of stone.
An Ounce Of Prevention Is Worth A Pound Of Cure
Once you have freed yourself from the kidney stone or stones, keep them away, by starting every morning with one or two ounces of lemon juice in 8 ounces of water every morning. I usually take two ounces. Lemon water has many health benefits so don't hesitate in starting every day with it.
Another way to help prevent kidney stones from reappearing is a tablespoon, or two, of apple cider vinegar (ACV) in 8 ounces of water. Again, rinse mouth out after drinking to help protect teeth. Apple cider vinegar, like lemon juice, has many health benefits so it is great to use every day too. I would caution to make sure you are using unpasterized organic ACV, with "the mother" in it. I like, and use, Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar.
Consider giving it a try if you are struggling with trying to dissolve, and/or pass a kidney stone. My heart goes out to you if you are, since I know the pain that it causes. After you get rid of it, consider drinking the lemon water every morning to assist in keeping them away. It thankfully works for me, and it might work for you too. Besides that, it is a very healthy way to start the day.
I would also add EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). I've posted many times about EFT, so just do a search on my blog, if you need information about that. One of the most successful medicines ever tested is the placebo. Believing something will work is very powerful, so don't underestimate that aspect of healing. Remember positive energy is healing.
I know some of you find yourselves without medical insurance, and can't afford to see a doctor. But I need to tell you, that if your are having any difficulty, please go for medical help, because kidney stones can lead to very serious, even life threatening circumstances. I really wish everyone had access to medical help, and was able to afford it, especially alternative medicine.
6. PLANTAR WARTS - A while ago I noticed something on the bottom of my left foot. I thought it was a plantar wart, but when I checked pictures of plantar warts online it didn't look the same. So be aware they don't all look the same. As time went on it got worst, and it was getting very painful, and becoming difficult to walk. To make matters worst two more had appeared on the same foot.
I decided I needed to have it checked out by my doctor to see if they really were plantar warts. My doctor confirmed that they were, and recommended a cream as a treatment.
My doctor knows me well, and wrote down the medication so that I could check it out before filling it. My doctor knows I will only take a prescription medication at last resort, after I tried all other natural wholistic safe treatments. If I find I can't live with the condition any longer, I may consider conventional treatment after much thought, and research.
Well, would you like to guess one of the side effects of the medication? It's death. The cream is an immune suppressant, which "they" refer to as an "immune modulator". It goes almost without saying, I never even considered the cream.
I needed to do something, though, as I need to be able to walk, and it was becoming more painful, and difficult walking around. Anyone who has had a plantar wart knows how bad they can be. They are not like other simple warts on the hand. Plantar warts are on the bottom of the foot, and they grow up inside the foot, and can really cause problems with pain, and mobility.
I researched, and came upon a treatment I knew would work, and work fairly quickly (my intuition again). I thought, at first, I would just use coconut oil, as that has anti-viral properties, but I thought it would take much longer, and might not work at all.
This build up is for the best, simplest, and safest cure for plantar warts. Are you ready? It's Duck Tape, yes Duck Tape! All you have to do is keep a piece of Duck Tape on the plantar wart until it is healed. You should change it every day, or every couple of days.
I had to keep 3 pieces of Duck Tape on my foot, because of the 3 warts, and it took awhile for them all to go away, especially the really big painful one, but they all went away. I keep them away now by keeping my immune system in top shape. It did take about 3 weeks for a cure, remember natural cures take time, but they are usually safer. Each time you take off the old piece to put on a fresh piece, you will notice that the "inside" of the wart will come off with the tape. You don't need to do anything else, but be consistent, and patient.
7. ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE - (This is an adaptation of an entry I wrote on October 21, 2013). Coconut Oil is a viable treatment for Alzheimer's Disease. And while there is not yet a cure, this simple method can prevent further decline, and even reclaim much of the lost brain function.
I'm going to enclose a youtube video link below so that you can watch the short news broadcast about this treatment, and you can do a youtube search for further information about it. I decided to post the short video because I think more people will watch it rather that a long, or multiples videos, but if you want more information you can easily find it on youtube. Just search Coconut Oil and Alzheimer's, and/or Dr. Mary Newport, and many videos will come up. Do as much research as you can about this, and spread the word. Tell people even if they doubt you.
Mary Newport, M.D. is largely responsible for the coconut oil treatment. Her husband has early onset Alzheimer's Disease, and she has successfully treated him with coconut oil for years, and is trying to get the word out about this successful treatment. You can do a search on youtube for her complete story since there are many videos posted there. She also wrote a book in 2011 titled "Alzheimer's Disease: What If There Was A Cure?"
I was surprised that so many people still don't know about this, so please help me spread the word. A lot of people will doubt you before even finding out the science behind it, but please don't let that stop you from telling them. I always figure it is my responsiblity to inform others of what I know, and then I leave it up to them what they want to do about it. Long ago I realized I couldn't change anyone, or even make someone try something that works. As hard as it was to accept, I have learned to accept it, move on, and wish them well. So many people think something has to be very complicated to be successful. They just can't believe that something so simple could actually work. You may find it difficult to believe yourself, but as least read this, because I've laid out the basics that you need to know to get started. If you can't learn about this for yourself, do it for someone you love.
This is about the Ketogenic Diet, and coconut oil. I've mentioned the Ketogenic Diet in my posts before, and stated that it is also a great diet for cancer, especially brain cancer. The Ketogenic Diet is difficult to stay on because of the low carb requirement. It is basically a very high fat, very low carb, and sufficient protein diet. The Ketogenic Diet produces ketones in the body. You also get this when you are on a reducing diet, and during starvation. All of these ways would, for obvious reasons, be difficult to continue for very long. But it was discovered that a simple way to produce these ketone bodies is to incorporate a medium chain fatty acid in your diet. That's where coconut oil comes in.
You can do the research for the in-depth scientific explanation, if that is important to you, but a simple explanation is that the brain develops insulin deficiency, and insulin resistance. This causes a problem getting glucose into the neurons of the brain so the neurons malfunction, and eventually die. Since there are billions of neurons in the brain, the brain is able to compensate for a while, but over time, they believe about 10 to 20 years, the brain can no longer compensate, and you lose certain pathways in the brain.
The amazing thing is that even though the brain can no longer use glucose for the energy it needs, it can use ketone bodies which comes from the break down of certain fats. Most fats are composed of long chain fatty acids which cannot cross the blood brain barrier. Coconut oil is predominantly composed of medium chain fatty acids. Medium chain triglycerides go directly into the liver where part of it is turned into ketone bodies. These ketones are then used by the brain for energy in place of the glucose, which it normally uses. Since coconut oil is in itself a very healthy oil, with wonderful qualities, it is anti-bacteria, anti-fungal, and anti-parasitic, it can be continued indefinitely.
I do have to mention that there is a contrary belief that glucose uptake is not insulin dependent. I tend to fall on the side of Dr. Newport that glucose is at least partially insulin dependent, but I'll let more scientific minds fight that out. The main take-away is that coconut oil works.
It appears that the "sweet spot" of coconut oil dosage is about 4 tablespoons for Alzheimer's, but I caution, start out slowly. I would recommend starting with one teaspoon, and gradually increase to "level of tolerance." Everyone's level of tolerance will be different, but if you exhibit intolerance, say with diarrhea, before the 4 tablespoons you can often cut back, and then increase slowly to a higher level. Even 2 tablespoons a day may help a little.
The other important thing to mention is that you want to spread the oil out into numerous dosages a day. It appears best to include some at every meal, about 3 or 4 times a day, since the effects of the oil appear to wane a little after many hours. It can't be predicted how quickly, or slowly the effects will wane, each person is different. You need to experiment. Please post your results, and what you did, since we all need to share information to help each other.
We're talking about a lot of oil, so I would recommend using only coconut oil, or at least severely limit all other oils. Most other oils are quite unhealthy anyway; see my previous post of March 22, 2010 entitled "Fat Is Where It's At." With this level of fat you also have to consider any gall bladder, kidney, and/or liver disease issues, but for the most part coconut oil is extremely well tolerated.
I, myself, don't cook with any oils, or fats, if I did though, I would only cook with coconut oil since it is one of the few oils that will not go rancid during heating. The only oil I personally use is coconut oil, and only get other fats from nuts, seeds, avocados, and organic plain yogurt. I would recommend not heating the oil, although you can up to 350 degrees. Some ways that people like the coconut oil is in coffee, or tea. You can add it to soups, hot cereals, rice, pasta, and quinoa dishes after they are cooked. You basically can use it any way that you can use any other oil, or fat. It will be liquid when it reaches a temperature of 76 degrees, or higher, and solid at lower temperatures. Also, make sure you only use cold pressed UNREFINED pure coconut oil.
It is important to also include a good Omega 3 supplement of DHA and EPA. I won't recommend a brand, but make sure it is pure without contaminants, and if you are a vegetarian, as I am, you can now get an Omega 3 supplement with DHA and EPA from algae oil. As great, and healthy as coconut oil is it doesn't contain Omega 3 so you will need to supplement that. Most people need to take an Omega 3 DHA and EPA supplement anyway, and even more so for someone with Alzheimer's Disease.
I need to mention that this treatment is not an excuse to continue with a poor diet. You need to clean up your diet, and if you are suffering from any of the above mentioned diseases you need to remove all sugars, and processed foods from your diet now. Eat a simple diet that consists of as much whole organic foods that you can, especially vegetables, low carbs, and stay well hydrated with pure water. A clean healthy diet is even more important if you are suffering with any disease.
You should also optimized your vitamin D level to at least 70ng/ml. I would supplement with vitamin D3, not the synthetic vitamin D2. If you supplement with vitamin D you also need to optimize your vitamin K2 level. It is very important to balance both. You can obtain vitamin K2 from fermented foods with live probiotics, not pasturized versions, or a good high quality probiotic supplement. I almost can't stress this enough.
A healthy gut flora is of utmost importance in all health, and that especially includes brain health. The brain and the bowel are intimately connected; the condition of the bowel directly influences the health of the brain. That is another reason why a good quality probiotic, in foods, or supplement form is essential.
Some other things that may be helpful include turmeric in foods, or a turmeric (curcumin) supplement. Turmeric has amazing health benefits. The "B" vitamins, especially the trio of B6, B9, and B12. Make sure the B12 is in the methylcobalamin form, not the cyanocobalamin form. You also need to take B12 sublingually (under the tongue) which is the best way for it to be absorbed. I also like digestive enzymes, which you can take before meals, as well as between meals. This again has a lot to do with the bowel brain connection. Possibly CoQ10 in the ubiquinol form, not the ubiquinone form, may help, and MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) in powder form.
I hesitate to recommend any other supplements, or herbs, which could be risky. I've only recommended natural substances which are in foods, the foods themselves, or substances we produce in the body, but may be insufficient in disease states. Having said that, you still need to consult with your doctor while taking these things, because while they are usually very safe, each individual reacts differently to everything. Also, anyone can be allergic to anything, even something that is safe for most, so again, be careful and, consult with your health professional.
I want to state that everyone may not improve with the coconut oil, but the feedback that Dr. Newport has gotten so far is that about 9 out of 10 people show some improvement, and many show dramatic improvement. I believe that if you use all of my recommendations it will be helpful for most people, but you cannot just take coconut oil, and continue with harmful health habits, and expect a total cure if you are unwilling to improve your total health. For optimal health, for everyone, you need to remember two things bring dense nutrients in, and get dangerous toxins out. Just try to get as many toxins as you can out of your life.
